Frequently Asked Questions

What’s so special about seeds?

Seeds are the starting material of plant life, so each tiny little package naturally contains big amounts of essential nutrients and energy to promote plant growth. When we eat seeds (especially seeds that are milled or ground up into small pieces) we absorb many important vitamins & minerals, along with healthy unsaturated fats and antioxidants. Seeds actually contain more fiber and in some cases more protein than nuts! They are also less problematic when it comes to food allergies, with far fewer people experiencing negative reactions (except for sesame seeds, which were recently added to the “Big 9” allergens in the US). Diets rich in fiber-filled seeds like Pumpkin, Flax, Sesame & Sunflower have been shown to improve gut health and reduce inflammation. In fact, many people who menstruate eat these four seeds daily to practice Seed Cycling - a natural approach to managing PMS symptoms and supporting cycle regularity by eating specific seeds during different phases of the menstrual cycle. Bottom line: seeds are naturally full of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals that are a great addition to any diet!

Ground vs. whole seeds - what’s the difference?

Ground or milled seeds are easier for your body to break down and process compared to whole seeds, so you get maximum nutrient absorption while limiting digestion issues that can accompany these high fiber superfoods. All of our Seed Products are made with freshly ground seeds, spices and dried fruits (hello, bites!) so you can easily integrate them into your daily routine. No muss, no fuss!

What is period poverty?

Period poverty is defined as a lack of access to menstrual products, hygiene facilities, waste management, and menstruation education. It affects 500 million menstruators globally, and the negative stigma surrounding periods keeps billions of people from talking about period poverty. Like other forms of poverty, period poverty can be debilitating - having emotional, physical, and mental health effects. Human Kind Foods proudly partners with Sylvia’s Sisters in the fight against period poverty. Together, we are working to provide menstruation supplies to those in need and normalize period talk in the communities we serve.

How does Human Kind Foods fight period poverty?

We donate 10% of profits from our seed-based products to Sylvia’s Sisters. Sylvia’s Sisters is an organization based in Richmond, VA that is dedicated to fighting period poverty locally and in Uganda by supplying period products and access to basic hygiene. Human Kind Foods currently directs all of its donations to Sylvia’s Sisters’ Ugandan effort, where we can make the biggest impact. For each month of our Seed Blends or Seed Bites purchased, we donate 6 months of reusable period supplies from AFRIpads (a 95% woman-employed Ugandan company) to menstruators in need!
